knee replacements

I was hit by a car in 1990- the car was going around the corner and hit me and i landed on my knees. fast forward to now...major pain in my knees and i ended up getting an mri recently and went to the drs yesterday. he is now sending me to a orthapedic surgeon. What can i expect? If i end up going for knee surgery, how long is recovery? whats the pain like? any tips?

A friend of mine had trouble with his, after being fouled playing football (soccer) it took him awhile for things to become fully normal. (I think it was several months, maybe 6)
Most cases would depend on how your treatment goes, but I'm sorry to hear about your problems and I hope the pain isn't to bad.
