When to decide on the best response?

I was wondering what everyones criteria is on when to decide who the best response is on a topic they have started? I have been to to some discussions withing a few hours of it starting and they already have a best response. I think this is too soon and may detract from the quality of responses by doing so. I like to wait at least a couple of days. This gives everyone a chance to logon and respond. If I think that none of the responses wualify for best then I do not give one. What is your policy on giving out the best responses?
