Do you still believe in shouldering the burden of extended family?

As time passes by, the family is increasingly getting more nuclear, the immediate family so to say. When we were growing up, my parents had a host of extended family members like the child of an Aunt, the son of my marternal Uncle, the daughtr of my fathers's best friend, an abandoned son of a neighbour etc. These people would be clothed and fed by my parents. Some of them were paid to study. Am wondering, is extended family system still the in-thing today?

i'm from the philippines and in my country, family ties are extended even up to most distant relatives. even until now, people here tend to recognize extended family members, especially those underprivileged ones. many filipinos have extended family members depending on them for food, education, and other basic needs. for me, i don't think it's wrong to help other people. but what usually happens is that some become too dependent or abusive of the help given to them that they no longer strive hard to earn their own living. this is where it becomes all wrong. but like they say, a family will always be a family no matter what...

In my family we've been practicing that since the time I was born( I think hehe) and until this time.I've grown up with either a child of a relative or close friend living in our house and its my parents who were financing his/her education. In return he/she will help some of the household chores. This has become a natural situation in us and I think it will always be an in-thing as long as my parents are alive :)
