it has been my daily routine after marriage to go for a walk in the morning and buy some choice veggies for the day from the fresh stock that arrives daily morning in the Mother Dairy 'fruit n Vegetable' outlet. so i dont stack in my fridge and allow some to go waste unnoticedly. what about you? Do you buy the veggies on weekly basis and stack them up in your fridge or buy them daily?

that's an interesting question. because i buy veggies by the week ang stack them in the ref. and sometimes i do not have time to buy so we cook our meal without veggies. also veggies wither in a few days.. that's why you are lucky to have an outlet near you.

I am afraid we generally store them for the week in our fridge. Unless it is something that we are growing ourselves. There are very few fresh markets around here, and even then they are several miles from our home - so we do not get to them on a daily basis. If I lived in an area with farmer's markets I would definitely love to get my produce fresh daily.

growing veggies at home or maintaining a kitchen garden is a good idea if time permits. saves lot when you dont have a market even miles from your home.

Oh Lucky you! I love to have fresh vegetables and fruits as mere appearance of their freshness increases one appetite ! But unfortunately, we are staying on a Stud farm which is about 14 kilometers away from the township. Because of preoccupation and impracticability it becomes mandatory for us to store vegetables in our fridge! we go once in week or so on an average to market and try to grab as much as we can that can be styored in the fridge! Thogh there is lot of problem of power supply , since we have power back up in the form of generator our purpose of storing get solves! We also store Non- Veg also in the fridge and luckily we have a milk man who supplies milk daily to us at our door step other wise I think we had to had bulk purchase of milk also! Thanks for initiating such a practical discussion! All the best!

its really a tough task to manage things when you are so far away and to get fresh veggies everyday isnt possible. i wonder how the other people of your area are managing to stack up in their fridges with the interuppted power supply. thanks for sharing your thoughts

There are times when I buy vegetables which is estimated to be consumed within three days. At most times though, some end up rotting because we do not eat as much as I figured. There is a marketplace though which is within walking distance from our home. This is from where we usually secure those vegetables which are best only in their freshest state. Since we can easily have them on a daily basis, i don't find any difficulty in coping about having any whenever needed.

I always keep veggies in my fridge, i have those little baby carrots always, and i also keep fruit such as grapes, apples, oranges, yogurt, and easy access foods that are health friendly.I am glad to hear that you take a daily walk ,that is a very good habit to get into..I usually stack them in my fridhe and buy them every few days, they go fast in my house...

Yes, we can keep carrots, potatoes, cucumbers and others more for days and they are still in their good shapes. The leafy vegtables though are very sensitive. If we keep them until the third day in the refrigerator, they no longer look good enough to cook. This is what usually happened to me before because we do not consume as much as the bulk I usually buy. The temptation to buy quite a lot overcomes me sometimes whenever they come in so cheap. Perhaps next time, I will consider sharing them with friends and neighbors.

yea but the root veggies also tend to loose life after 2-3 days. it best to finish them up as soon as possible.

My mom and I usually went on fresh stock once a week. We don't buy much though, it's just enough for about 2 or 3 days. There are also veggies sellers that wander around our house on morning. So, when we run out stock, we can wait for him to come around brings veggies on morning. We stacked them on fridge, but only in small quantity. After all, we don't have big family to feed in. It's just me, my mom, my dad and my brother. My pets don't like veggies..LOL.

good that you stck in small quanties and have a street vendor coming regularly. we see the vendor only once a week. i love herbivorous pets anyway.:)

I do shopping once a week and stack veg in my fridge, it works out cheaper as I would buy more if going shopping more often would mean I would buy more. Its easier to keep to a budget if only doing the shopping once a week as then I will just have to manage with whatever is in the house.

buying on whole sale prices indeed says budget but i guess stacking up too much of veggies will leave many rotten easily unless you are stacking these veggies evenly in the whole fridge.

I normally buy few vegetables every weekend. Every other day, there's a cart roaming around our village selling organic eggs and vegetables. Its quite costly compared to the regular veggies. BUT, knowing its organic and free of pesticide, I still buy some organic veggies. I don't like to buy a lot as veggies tend to get rotten quickly. I like my veggies to be fresh.

yes a cart also comes into our colont every sunday but he sells only onions and potatoes at whole sale prices. but organic veggies are really best but costly here where i live.

We consume lots of green leafy vegetables daily. At times, it is difficult find green leafy vegetables, especially during rainy seasons. My mum will buy them when she sees them and stock them in the fridge. Perhaps that is the reason why we eat so much vegetables daily - so that she can replenish them regularly. She makes a daily trip to the market daily.

as for me, i but them as and when needed. but this one only applies to the greens. however, for cabbages, carrots and the likes, i buy them on weekly basis. the greens cannot be stored like a week in the fridge. it won't be fresh.

true. leafy veggies are best for use on the same day. i observed that cabbages become a little tasteless after 2-3 days in the fridge carrots are fine though. thanks for sharing ally...
