Superheroes are stupid

Superman - Superman wearing his underpants where it can be seen.
Isn't that supposed to be "under" the overall they wear?

There has always been the fuzz about superheroes being strong and clever guys and gals, but has it ever occured to you once before why old-school superheroes like superman and batman wore their underwear on the the outside? This may sound like a joke, but I've always wondered why they have to wear their undergarment(supposedly) after they first get into their overalls. Look at the picture (that looks like underwear to me) lol! Do you know why? Comic fanatics out there, could you please explain this?

I think you need to ask the people who originally drew these superheroes - maybe they were only supposed to be wearing that one piece of clothing but it was considered offensive so they simply coloured in the exposed skin to make it look like a skin-tight outfit?!? I have no idea but I'm sure someone has some idea. (Maybe)
