Help settle a debate about who is a better driver

I was having a talk with my husband who claims to be a better driver than I am and later I was thinking what does better actually mean? I have been driving for longer than he has, have never had an accident, never been fined for speeding and never had a parking ticket. He has been involved in several accidents over the years and has had a number of tickets for both speeding and parking. I might concede that at times he is a more skilful driver than I am, certainly he often drives in such a way that if I tried it I would no doubt have an accident. So who would you consider to be a better driver? Someone with superior skill who sometimes drives dangerously or someone with less skill who is a more careful and safe driver?

This is a tricky question pilbara. I am a licensed insurance representative and the statistics are all in a females favor, regardless of driving experience. Statistically women have fewer accidents than men, that's why men pay a higher rate on car insurance until they are 25, where as women start catching a break at 21. Married men get lower rates than single men regardless of age, where with women after you turn 25 it doesn't matter if you're married or single. It's called an accident for a reason, it's an unforeseen event, but statistics prove men cause more accidents than women. Skill doesn't matter when it comes to driving, safety does.

Thanks for your comment. The bit about the statistics is one of those things that is common knowledge but we rarely get shown the proof of it. I consider safety more important when driving as well.

I really agree with the fact the my husband is a more skillful driver. He is more confident in his actions. When it snows, I drive slowly & carefully. He purposely slides on ice, etc to make me scared. He has never had an accident up to now either. I have only been rear ended at a stop light, so it wasn't my fault either. I have 0 tickets, he has a few. But skill wise, he is definitely a better driver. His reflexes are much faster than mine as well.

I will not judge both of you, but naturally I am going to side with you. As a woman I am a careful driver too. To me safety comes first. Why do we want to drive in a dangerous situation just in order to prove we are a skillful driver? That's nonsense. And that is only practical in the go-kart track. Lol. Just ignore your husband. I still think you are the better driver, and not him. Have a nice day.
