there are many ,many different breeds. i would first ask yourslef, how much experience do I have with horses, will I board it or keep it at home, what type of riding will i be doing? If you dont really know how to ride,i suggest first take lessons, you wil be doing yourself and your horse to be a huge favor!too many times i,ve been asked to help fix a broken horse because the human counterpart didnt knwo what they were doing. if you know how to ride, and are confident in your abilities your horse will trust oyu.. i,ve had people who knew nothing about horses, buy a young horse or pony for their youngster to grow up together! the kid ends up dislikeing the horse, and the horse becomes fearfull, spoiled and just full of bad habits. if you are a strong enough rider and feel comfortable go with the type of riding you will do, like trial, or if you wnat ot compeate, or do you want a horse for the whole familly?. for a trail horse you wnat an older seasoned horse. one who has been around alot of different situations and isnt going to spook or shy away form things. you will want to look at confirmation of the horse as well, you want a smooth gait fi you wil be spending hours on the trial! there are tons of good books that can help as well! good luck in your search!

There are rather a lot of books available on the subject and if you get those devoted entirely to horse breeds, there are mostly pictures and little to actually read if you have an aversion to that.

Well I've been around horses my whole life and riding since I was 3. It is so amazing and there are many many different breeds of horses. Are you just wanting them to ride around for say like trail riding and just do stuff at home? If so there are some breeds that are better for that. Here is a site that will let you know about all the different types of horses and breeds out there. http://www.asi.okstate.edu/breeds/horses/ That site will be able to help you learn about all the different breeds.
