really make a difference? for me, Yes. It is a common misconception that stand-by is practically the same thing as off. If something is on stand-by, it is still on. Same with the lights. Why leave them on when you don't need them? You get exercise in your fingers, you keep your bill down, and you help the environment. Seems like a small sacrifice--actually, it's not even a sacrifice. how about you?

My mom would always tell us that all electrical appliances would actually be better off shut (or unplugged if possible), than on standby. She said this doesn't only save on electricity but is safer. I'm not yet a mother, so I'm not very sure about this, but my sister and I have realized that when we're not using the appliances, and we have them shut off especially when we're out to work the whole day, our electric bill gets to be lower. And yes, good thing you mentioned the environment. That practice I know would help the environment for sure. Happy myLotting!

I always turn things off including lights and I have energy efficient light bulbs, I also boil only as much water as I need in the kettle as this helps to save money on electricity. I have an electricity meter so I try and save as much money in electricity as I can and every little helps.

it is true that when it is on stand by , it is still on and electricity is still running without us using it. it does help to keep all of these saving tips and it would help a lot of people and not only our own pockets.

i feel the same way. why leave it on standby if you're not useing it? it may only use a small amount of energy, but its still energy wasted. if EVERYBODY stopped leaving lights on, and leaving things on standby, etc. i wonder how much energy we could save in a year? i bet it would be huge!

I am working in a manufacturing environment. In my office, majority of the co-workers doens't turn off the equipment. Some of the equipment will emit noises when it's on. So, there is one time, i went to turn off all the equipment when no one is using, i was then properly adviced by my co-worker, turnning on and off will make the equipment life short, just leave it standby if you're not using it.
