How do you deal with negative people on the job?

I worked in Human Resources for a number of years before I became an author and freelance writer. I found that this was a real problem in companies, particularly big corporations and I had employees coming in quite often with complaints and issues about negative people. How do you handle negative people at work? Do you just ignore them, or do you say something? Have you ever quit a job because of a negative personality?

I do confront them personally. If there's something they don't like about me, I ask them what it is and I might be able to resolve it. But for those who are so negative and continue to do so even if I've done the best I can on my part to settle the situtaion, I just don't mind them and do my work.

That has always been my philosophy as well, and lord knows you have to have that one when you work in HR. LOL My grandmother used to always say life is too short for that stuff.

I just 'kill 'em with kindness'. I have found that when someone irks me the best thing to do is be as nice as I can be. They either get the picture or it really makes them mad, yet there is nothing they can say. What could they say? Stop being nice to me?
