After many, many years of smoking I decided to quit, not only because of the obvious health risks, but it was getting too expensive since I was a pack a day smoker. I was doing okay for awhile..almost a whole month but I have to admit I slipped..I noticed especially certain times of the day/nightI just HAD to smoke..every once in awhile I'd bum a cig..just one and believe it or not, I made that one cig last all day! But then I discovered those real cheapie cigs..like Cheyanne..well..I nowhere near smoke as much but I know I should really make the attempt in earnest...but I hate the side effects symptoms I had when I did quit the worst being so gosh darn tired! So anyone struggling in wanting to quit...and if you have any suggestions to really quit in earnest?

get patches.that's the only thing that helps me. and vitamins for the tiredness. the worst is breaking the "routine" smoking (on the computer, phone,at work, etc) i have to quit also-not only the expense, but as a condition for surgery.ah,well.it's time,i think :)

That's when it really bothers me not to smoke...the computer and especially the phone..I don't smoke as nearly as much as I did...and can go a few days without it..which I never could before...so I guess that's good news..And I definitely eliminated one very bad habit...I think it was all the anxiety my mom created for me in my life, plus I was her caregiver especially during her last year of life...she didn't want a visiting nurse..oh joy...but the bad habit I had developed was that as soon as I woke up I'd roll over in bed and grab my cigs and smoke...yikes..even before I had my breakfast..that was a really lousy way to start the day...I don't do that though anymore. In fact, I hold off as long as possible and I purposely don't take cigs with me when I go out

I was just doing the cold turkey thing--I heard that the patch isn't so great as it has more nicotine in it than most people are used to..and of course you can't smoke at all anyway while using--not if you want ot invite a heart attack!! I heard cold turkey is the best way..unfortunately. But it's hard!

Oh...you had to go there. ha ha My partner had to bring that up again today. We tried some months ago...and I did a lot better than he. But I have got to tell ya, I was a crying and upset mess!!!! LOL I even got those Commit Lozenges things...Yuck! I can't have one of those in my mouth for more than a few minutes! This time I told him that if he wants to do such a thing again, WE MUST get medicinal help from the doctor! LOL So, I looked it up today and am supposed to call the doctor to set us both up with appointments sometime this week. ha ha And then I talked him into buying another carton saying that even on the medication you are supposed to ease out. ha ha Maybe you should look into Zyban or something. It is a receptor inhibitor...the receptors that receive the nicotine that is. But hey, I am right there with ya sweetie! Good luck! And keep us informed on how you are doing! I might be in the same boat soon too.

My fall to grace was discovering the cheapie cigs--I was smoke free for about a month only bumming a cig once in a blue moon...then I found out a pack of Cheyenne was only a buck...The worse symptom I had was bedgraggled tiredness when I did quit..it was suggested from one of the folks to take extra vitamins..no can do..I take a bunch as it is..but find if I take extra I had an adverse reaction...and I found the first three or so days of not smoking I was eating everything in sight...granted healthy foods, like a lot of rabbit food...celery...lettuce..cucumbers..still...gained weight!! urgggh MMMM as far as meds--I didn't think you could smoke when on meds or patches...unfortunately I've been told time and time again the best way really is the hardest...cold turkey...I don't know how a neighbor of mine did it...well actually she had to...was a chain smoker..and developed emphresyma but she did it cold turkey..another one everyone says..to drink a lot of water...guess that means a lot of trips to the bathroom--LOL Maybe we should start a stop smoking thing on this..a blog?? and keep each other posted on how we're all doing to give each other encouragement

I had to laugh what you said being a Tasmanian devil! No I wasn't that bad...my worse symptom was complete tiredness...but I really do want to stop again...as for meds...I'm a little leary of them as I'm not much of a medication taker and my system is just not used to them...the most I ever take at anytime is aspirin, and occasionally anti-biotic for infections...but I wanted to strangle my doc once who one time gave me a super duper strong anti-biotic--yikes I never had side effects like I did then-- I'm guilty of having bought another pack of cigs today...which is bad...they keep saying NOT to buy cigs...just knowing that there nearby will make you smoke again...going to at least start tapering off again, and make this pack the last...I mean here I was..I did quit--gee for a whole month--LOL--I did notice my sinus problems were clearing up, my sense of taste and smell was better...now I'm all congested again...urrrgghhhh

I don't smoke but I know a lot of people who do. There is suppose to be this really good prescription medication out there that works wonders. Try going to your doctor and talk to him about it to see if it'll be good for you :) Good luck on trying to quit. My dad is doing the same thing. He's gone over a month now. I just wish the hubby and mom (she has emphysema and is getting ready to have part of her lung removed - and she watched her father die from emphysema) would LOL.

I'm not the best person to advise you. I just started again after being quit for two and a half years. I highly recommend Alan Carr's book...The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It's fabulous. I lent my 2 copies out and now I need one. I can recommend lots of things from his book but you're better off reading through it yourself. Honestly, you'll be so glad you did. I wish you luck and I wish you joy. Being smoke free is wonderful and the extra money is awesome. I'm a silly bloody fool...thought I could have a few and got hooked again. Plan on stopping soon before it really takes hold...I feel like crap.

I know what you mean..about feeling lousy for smoking again...although I can skip days without smoking so I guess I'm not as hooked as I used to be...

I quit cold turkey about 12 years ago. I had quit several times before then but always went back to the miserable habit. I didn't smoke during my pregnancies and I didn't smoke when my ex had his lung surgery. He had half a lung removed for cancer and it never phased him he went back to smoking. I was smoking almost 2 packs a day, but it was way to expensive so I just decided to quit and that was the end of it. I am very glad I did it because my sense of smell and my sense of taste have both returned. It isn't easy, but you have to really want to do it or you won't make it. I think cold turkey is the best way to go. If you really want it you can get through it, after a month or so you will notice a lot of little differences. Good luck and hang in there.

Wow Kudos to you for not smoking for 12 years...and yes..cold turkey does seem to be the best way to go---I've been wanting to quit for the obvious health reasons too..but yes, it is just too darn expensive!

The hardest time is on the phone...what did you do? Honestly ever since I did well at first I did quit for a month, now just smoke a tad..but I noticed I wasn't talking on the phone much..that seems to be a real trigger for me.

If you know your triggers you have a good chance to beat it. Try chewing on something when you have the urge, gum or I used to keep pretzel rods for that.
