Here is a copy of an article in the newspaper stating the differences of an intelligent child from a gifted child. "There's a gift in every child... Experts say there is a difference between two groups of children: the intelligent and the gifted. Here is a list of characteristics: THE INTELLIGENT CHILD THE GIFTED CHILD Knows the answers Asks the questions Is interested Is highly curious Is attentive Is mentally and physically involved Works hard Plays around, yet tests well Answers the questions Discusses in detail, elaborates Is in the top group Is beyond the group Listens with interest Shows strong feelings and opinions Learns with ease Already knows Needs 6-8 repetitions Needs 1-2 repetitions for mastery Understands ideas Constructs abstractions Enjoys peers Prefers adults Grasps the meaning Draws inferences Completes assignments Initiates projects Is receptive Is intense Copies accurately Creates a new design"

I don't really like catgorizing children because I believe that each child is gifted and intelligent in their own unique way. There are 8 known intelligencies and each could be good or weak in some aspects and it just balances the scale, generally. An introvert child who doesn't ask a lot of question may be gifted in art but not in interpersonal intelligence.

You know IQ can actually be increased. Many of us think that IQ is as high as it's given to us when we are born and it's totally WRONG. If you have more interest in it you may want to check www.IncreaseBrainPower.com or anyother site like this. It's really cool you know, try it. :)

Wow! Reading this has flattered me really! Because I always thought that I'm not an extraordinarily intelligent person, but above average. But the comparison chart you've given says that I'm a gifted person! Because I matched in all of them, except one! heheheheh

Aye I was, or am. I got tested back in second grade because they thought I had a disorder. Turned out I was just smarter than average and bored most of the time. However sometime later the highschool principle got the notion I was "handicapped" and had me tested again and I was still way above average. Being gifted means a whole lot of nothing unless you've got the motivation to do something with it. that motivations harder to get if the school you're in has no gifted class as well.

My daughter is gifted. This was diagnosed when she was three years old. She is in the gifted class at high school. Many people don't know how to tell the difference between a gifted child & an above average, highly motivated child. In fact, even some teachers don't recognise it. There are other indications to giftedness, as well as the above. These include certain issues with social interactions, a strong sense of social justice, unusual medical problems, etc.

Well i guess i was more the gifted child, by this article. But i also had a few things that belonged to the intelligent child as written in this article. i know i was always asking the questions, but i also knew the answers. Lol. i was always curious but i did play around alote. I never did well at tests, because i did not have the patient to start written what i already knew, that seemed a waste of time , even when i was a child. I always preferred adults, cause i felt the youngsters do not really interest me, or has something important to add to my life. Well i guess it is possible to belong to the two definitions. isn't it?

yes. i also belong to both definitions. he he! i think they missed the third category ha ha!

Based on the given characteristics, I am intelligent, to a minimum extent, gifted. However, I feel that gifted can be nutured from young, something which my parents is not able to provide. Today's kids are born both intelligent and gifted as they tend enjoy better standard of living and love and attention showered by their parents.

So the Intelligent characteristics are supposed to be on the left and the gifted on the right side? I guess I am more so gifted on that set of guidelines then...although I do have some of the intelligent traits too:) It sounds like it was a really interesting article. Thank you for sharing it:)

Well according to an article I'm bit of both. But I didn't feel like that I'm a gifted child. I didn't find anything of sort in me which I can called as a gifted talent. Neither I find myself as much intelligent person as most of the time I remain confused in taking decissions.

I was classified as "gifted" when I was in 5th grade. In our schoolsystem, that just meant that we would go to another school one day every week or two to and work on special projects or take a class not usually offered at the regular grade level. In high school, we had a class 3 time a week that wsa sort of a history and ethics class that was mostly discussion based. Personally, I'm sort of the "low end" of gifted, or gifted, but not so much intellligent. I didn't take many advanced classes like the other gifted kids did in high school and was mostly a B average student. The problem with most of the gifted kids I was with (myself included) was that many things came so easy to us that we sort of were able to coast along and didn't have to really strive and work as hard to make good grades; I think this works against us in adult life, because the people who really knew how to apply themselves are the ones that usually get ahead in business, etc.

My son was given an IQ test in 2nd grade and had a 135 IQ. he was just tested this year for Gifted and was placed in Gifted classes. He is now in 4th Grade. A lot of the differences thatare listed are true of my son. He definitely prefers adults, he tests very well, and lots of other things. I suggest to any parent that feels their child is gifted, get him tested. AND DO NOT GIVE UP !! I was put off for years by teachers, etc, until finally this year I put my foot down. When they saw his IQ from 2 years ago was that high, plus his scores on the tests, they actually asked me why he wasn't placed in gifted earlier. I politely told them to talk to each other and find out !! He is doing so much better now with peers and work that challenge him. The difference is amazing.

Going by the aricle I would conclude that I ma gifted . Though it is just someones way of looking at intelligence . I could go all the way around writing another aricle in which I would just exchange the qualities assigned to the gisted and the intelligent . Then the intelligent would look better than the gifted . Its more of what you want to qualify as intelligence and what as a gift .
