I know the cultures all-around the world are very different and every religion has its own way to celebrate the festivals and occasions. I am from India and belong to one of the southern states - Kerala. Accordidng to the traditions, Today is our NEW YEAR and we celebrate it in a different way. It starts by getting really early in the morning 2AM or 3AM. Its belived that First thing to do on the First Day of the new Year is to see ourselves in the Mirror along with the offerings to the Dieties. This event in my language is called ' KANI KAANAL'.I have attached the picture of this event. Later the elder people in the house give the younger people small amount of money. It can be from $1 - $100 ..depends on how generous elders are!! this is called 'VISHU KAINEETAM'. Later in the morning we get up and get dressed in our new clothes. Nice delicious lunch is prepared (yes vegeterian) and other families are invited to join in the lunch too!! After the heavy meal everyone as usual Dozesss off!! I would like to know how other people in diff. parts of the globe celebrate their traditional New Year? Lets keep the ball rolling..
