i've been using ubuntu for quite some times. what i can say is it isn't an out-of-box software as i have to spend a lot of time searching the net on how to configure certain things such as how to play mp3. i've also tried gimp. to me, it's not an alternative to photoshop. i would rate it as difficult to use (in my opinion). i've a nice experience using gaim. having one software for all my messenger accounts is very useful. i would give scribus a thumb up. it's not straightforward to use but to me, it can match pagemaker. i think, those who create and involved in creating open source software has done a great job. it might not be to everybody's liking but if you spend some times with it, you'll find it will get the job done. what is your experience using open source software?

Like any computer software, you need to spend time learning how to use it. There's always a first time for everyone and it's not always that easy specially when you don't have someone who can guide you. It's fortunate however for the current generation that you can easily ask help or search the internet for useful information and that's where open source stand out more than proprietary software. The open source community is the spirit behind open source software, it's you, me and the developers. I've been using open source applications and operating systems since 1997, I only spend a week of reading before I switch fully using open source software and never turn back since then I'm happy with it and later my officemates slowly adopting open source for they realize that office work becomes a lot easier than before and the company did not pay a cent except for the internet connection. A lot of savings, more productive and happy office workers. :)

I agree. Those who do this opensource software do great work to make stuff easier. One thing though is that I do wish they put in some guides and how-tos for their stuff. It does take me a while to figure things out. I hope some opensource people are reading this. Kudos on the job, better documentation may be needed though. Peace!

Many open source desktop software are still buggy or do not provide enough features. To me, it can get the job done, but it is still not as efficient as the Windows counterparts. However, I am looking forward for more community involvement to improve it......
