Cell phones and the ability to switch carriers with same number in Canada

Before when one had a cell phone in Canada and did not like the carrier, he had to get a new number and break the contract which meant he had to shell out a lot of money. Now not only can one keep the cell phone number he got from one carrier and switch it to another, but he can even switch his home phone number to a cell phone number. This means instead of having a home phone number and a cell phone number, many are just having cell phone numbers.
And people like me who already have a home phone number and just want a cell phone for when we go on a trip or for emergencies are in a bind. I was wondering for the
Canadians on myLot, whether the new regulations have affected their decision to get a cell phone when they do not want to get rid of their home phone?

If I had cell phone then that's what I would keep instead of home number. This way I don't have to pay for 2 phone # and yet I can be reached anywhere I go. If it's only home phone # I think you can tell your friends and family if you don't have it anymore.

I was talking to my friends who have cellphones, and they said they did not give up their home phone number. They use the cellphones when they are out shopping, and away from the house. And I suppose since you only give the cellphone number to friends, there is no spam.

I guess they can afford paying 2 phone bills. I wouldn't

We get free long distance and free caller id with our home phone, and it is integrated with our cable and internet connection so we stick with that. The cell phone is mine and for emergencies.
