To malayalees I don't have to explain, this explanation is for other country peoples . Vishu is a festival celibrated in Kerala a State in India.As this is considered as malayalam New Year its importance increases . This day is celibrated in the othr parts of India also, they have some other names.Like in Assam they celib Bihu, In Panjab,Baisakhi, In Tamil Nadu Putthandu etc etc.In Kerala Vishu day begins with Vishu Kani.This offering consist of ritual arrangement in the PUJA room (Praying Room)of asuspitious articles like raw rise,fresh linen,golden cucumber,betel leaves, fruts, vegitables,arecanut, metal mirror,the yello flowers of Kanikonna (cassia fistula, the national flower of kerala), and coins in a belmetal vessel called "Uruli" in malayalam.a bell metal lamp called "Nilavillakku " is placed alognside.This arrangement is completed in previous night & the yelder people will rise earlier around 4 AM or so and see teh visukanni,(it is watched by waking up eyes closed and walks to the pooja romm eyes closed then openes the eyes in front of the kani arranged previous day). then they will take the younger peope & children also to see the Vishu kani. after that every body will be given Vishu Kineetan by the most seniour member of that family.
