Children left in cars unattended...What do you think?

I went to Orchard Supply Hardware (AKA OSH) with my oldest son yesterday. While we were walking towards the store, from the parking lot, I happened to see two little boys, (who looked to be about 3 and 6) in a minivan, alone, with no adult supervision. Isn't this endangering the children? After all, anything could have happened to them as there are a lot of weirdos out there. Back when I was growing up there were a few times my sister and I were left unattended in the car. It was never for long, but oh how I hated it and worried about something bad happening! And as a parent I hate thinking of leaving my kids alone in my truck...even if it is only for a few minutes.

I could never leave my kids unattended in the car alone, not even for a minute or so. When I was a kid, myself and my sister were left in the car on our own a few times - only for a few minutes, but we were safe enough that nothing would happen to us. Everything was a lot safer back then. These days, I couldn't even imagine leaving my kids unattended, quite aside from the fact that my daughter would freak about being left alone. It's dangerous and just begs someone to give you an opinion of what they think about you leaving your children alone.

Well my personal opinion on this is its stupid for any adult to leave a child in a car alone. Not only is it dangerous and the child could put the car into gear causing an accident but what happens if some stranger was to come up or something? I cant believe parents still do this even after all the horror stories through out the years. All I got to say to these parents out there is use your heads and protect and look after your children before they are gone or get hurt. No child should ever be left alone in a vechile of any kind.

"Back when I was growing up there were a few times my sister and I were left unattended in the car" yea but things were so different back then....now days leaving young kids in a car unattended is just asking for trouble IMO...and though I've left my kids in the truck, my kids are 12 and 13.5, when they were little like that there is no way in hell I'd leave them unattended like that!! thats just insane IMO

I lived in a pretty big city (San Francisco Area) and even "back then" there were abductions and such. Now, had I lived in the country miles away from civilization, then it would have been different back then I'm sure. Oh, and my sister and I always behaved in the car, because we knew better than to touch things like the emergency brake while alone (or not) in it, but even back then I don't doubt there were kids that did know better, just like there are kids that don't know better now (even if they've been told over and over not to do it). After all kids can get into mischief especially when unattended, it just depends on the child.

I would never leave my child alone in the car. My friend as a child found a lighter in the car, when she was left alone, you can just imagine the horror of what she went through because she lit herself on fire. There is no excuse to leave children alone in cars. Sure, it can be a royal pain to get them out to go pay for gas, but that's sure a lot easier than caring for a sick child or looking for a missing one!

Wow, I never thought of a child finding a lighter in the car. I could only imagine what your friend went through. What a nightmare it must have been for her and her family.:(

Where I live it is illegal to leave a young child in a car alone. Whether or not it was illegal I would never leave my children alone in a vehicle. You never know when someone night decide to steal your car. I couldn't imagine what it would feel like if I had left my children in the car and it got stolen. I would never want to have that feeling.

Where is it that you live, I think that it is a good idea to make it illegal to leave your kids in a car alone. I think that leaving your kids alone in a car is not a good idea, as of course there is the possiblity that your car could get stolen with them in the car. But I think that the trouble that the kids could get into in the car by themselfs would most likely be more probable.

I dont know what age is considered "ok" to leave kids alone in a car, but my kids a 7 1/2, 5, 2 and 7 months and no way would I leave any in the car, yeah its harder to get anything done, but at least I know they are safe! I dont know when/if I will ever be comfortable with it. I guess when they are all teens..lol. I have seen kids about 9 left alone in cars. I dont know, that's still too young to me.

Leaving children unsupervised in a vehicle is against the law! Very dangerous! The other day I was in line at a store, and a woman cut in line behind me (the person behind me was about 12 years old and intimidated) -- then she tried to cut in line in front of me! She said to me: "My children are alone in the car, I'm in a hurry" and I told her "Don't you know its illegal to leave children unsupervised in a car? Anything can happen to them!" I still refused to let her cut in front of me! Why should I have let her? I stood in line, she could too! I told her that! Her response about leaving her children alone in a car being illegal was; "Oh, my husband is with them!" So, this woman was lying to cut in line, but it seems that she either lied that her husband was with the kids, or that the kids were alone. Either way, if I saw kids alone in a car, I would notify authorities.

Those boys were too young - you are correct. It is dangerous to leave your kids alone. Especially it is dangerous in the summer when they can soon suffocate. It doesn't take long. Parents need to slow down and make sure they are thinking correctly.

it is dangerous i guess especially if some strangers kidnapped them or what if some vehicles have collided with their car?

Whether it is illegal or not, leaving kids unattended inside the vehicle is very irresponsible. Unavoidable accidents might happen and some kidnappers might get the kids. I would never leave my kid inside the vehicle without an adult watching him.

I don’t think I can ever leave my daughter alone in the car. I think it’s really dangerous and we really don’t know what can happen so I would rather be safe than sorry. I have a nanny who takes care of my daughter but even if the nanny is around, I would still follow my daughter everywhere she goes. I see to it that I’m really hands on when it comes to taking care of her so I can personally see and witness what’s going on

I know there is a law in your country forbidding parents to leave children in the car. Am I right? We don't have that kind of system here. But its too dangerous to leave children in the car even for a minute. Whoever left the boys might thought that its safe enough to leave them there or she/he will not be gone for long. I hope all parents should know that anything can happen and its best to tag them along no matter how inconvenient it will be. It's just not acceptable.

i would never leave my children unattended anywheren.because the risk that something happens is just too big.I'd also love to have them around me.My parents only left us unattended when we were older and were able to stay alone.I think as an adult you're responsible for your children and you should take the responsibility to not leave your childen alone.

Anyone who can leave there kids in the car while they are not there, should be punished. I can not stand to see or hear anything like that. It makes me so mad. I am very picky about how people treat their children. I think that is very wrong to leave them in the car alone. Something very bad could hapen.

Time sure has changed. Now a days, leaving a child in a car is child endangerment and you could of/should of called the police. The parent or whoever left the kids in the minivan would of got a ticket and CPS would of been called and the family would of been watched for a while to make sure it didn't happen again. Leaving a child in a car, my goodness, anything could of happened to those kids. Someone could of snatched them up or anything could of went wrong. But next time I would make sure and call the police. So at least the parent could be warned not to do it again.

hi sacmom. It is very dangerous leaving children in cars, I can think of alot of things that could happen in such a short time of being left in a car. Like you, growning up I remember being left in the car with my young sister and young brother, and we hated it too. Always looking to see who might jump in or try too. Im a mother of 2 and no way will I leave my children, or any child for that matter in the car, for what ever reasons.

yes, that does make me sick too. there are a few other things, 1 not holding the children's hand while crossing the road, especially where there are no traffic lights or crossovers or zebra crossing. 2) say when you are walking along a road, on your left is the road, and on the right side of you are the shops or buildings, letting the children running around or leaving the on the left of you is very dangerous, kids do not know he danger of it, they can't estimate the speed of the car or the distance... it is just so sad that people do not think about the concequences...

Yes I agree. You are just endangering the lives of the children if you leave them unattended in a car. So many bad things can happen to them. One is the risk of being kidnapped.
