Okay folks, summer is fast approaching. Many of us are fair-skinned and cannot tan the old-fashioned way. Myself, I am going to try, yet again, to use a self-tanner. I only do this so that I don't blind people with the glare off my limbs! Everytime I have tried before, I end up with orange streaks. Please, any of you who can shed light on which brand to try and tips for application...I am all ears!

I am in the same boat you are in. I am blonde, blue eyed and have freckles. I am thinking of going with the Mystic Tan. That is where you go in the booth and strip and then spray some stuff on you and it lasts weeks. I am just wondering about how it works on the face. I also think it might be costly. Maybe they have a package deal of some sort.

I'm right there with ya! All of the products I have tried have either turned me orange or turned me orange with streaks. No matter what I used, it never worked! So I gave up. I have VERY light skin so I try to stay out of the sun as much as I can - which is hard living in So Cal but somehow I manage.
Please let us know if you use the little towels and if they worked for you.
Also, if you want to try a really good facial scrub you can make at home (before self-tanning).. try the aspirin scrub. Just take a couple of aspirin in the palm of your hand and add a little water, enough to mush them up and then scrub your face with them. Works wonders for the skin!
Good luck!

Well I've given up. I've tried so many different ones for so many years. I'm beginning to think my medications may affect the way they work. .. I know it affects the way my skin tans...or doesn't. So this summer they can all call me Miss Lilly White...lol But do let us know if the towlettes work...I may try again.

I am probably the last person who could give any advice here. I am in the sun for more tha 5 minutes and my skin turn a shade of red so deep I've had people mistake me for a stop sign. The only way around it for me is to either wear some sort of asbestos tinged sunscreen or a beekeepers outfit.

I always seem to have trouble with self tanners - no matter which brand I have used, they always seem to streak. My advice would be to use the newer, moisturising lotions with a "hint" of self tanner so you can build up the tan GRADUALLY. Otherwise you might end up with something uneven that takes days to fade.
I would recommend Johnson's Holiday skin. It gives a nice golden glow (not orange). In my opinion, it gives a better colour than the Dove branded one.
It's good to exfoliate your skin beforehand too so that it doesn't come on all uneven - and remember that knees, ankles and elbows seem to "attract" more colour so don't put too much on those otherwise you will get dark blotches there (darker than the rest of the body).

With all the hype of cancer these days I wonder how safe these tanners are, but good grief how safe is our food and water. I do know this there are a lot of people that use the tanners and I've never heard of any problems out here. I think they're probably no more dangerous than microwave ovens or computers, but I don't know.

I am fair skinned too and I burn easily. I just tried a self-tanner recently but really didn't see much difference. I may try another one. There are so many out there now. I know Nivea has one that looks pretty good. I think that you should always exfoliate your skin well first and then apply it. I don't know why yours would be streaking....maybe it's the way you are applying it. If you are not happy try and keep the bill and return it....and try something new...that is probably what I will do....

Just want to let you know you have a cheater on your discussion. bvb555 response # 12 copied response #9. Do these idiots think we are stupid to post the same response on the same discussion. He did it on one of mine and I reported him.

I think I would be putting it in somebody lotion and spreading the appliation out over a few days. With the lotion, you wouldn't get the full effect and would be able to go back in a few hours and touch up any spots that you missed. I think that's probablyn the idea behind those new crenes that have just a little in them and the tan gets darker every time you use it.

great discussion. I have never been able to apply that stuff no matter what brand I buy. They say to make sure you shave good and apply it dry and then stand until it's dry. But, it just never worked for me, either. I am always streaky which is worse than being overly white. :)

Want advice from an orange?
I actually look like the fruit when I pick up a tan, only on my hands but god knows why.
For me I just use sun cream and watch a golden tan come and go. (as well the orange hands) lol

you shouldn't use self-tanners.I know a product which is awesome. It works on all of my family members.Try collistar. It;s an Italian product but it's good for the skin and when you have been in the sun and you have also took the after sun you will stay brown. It's a lil bit expensive but it work s really good you have a lot of products of them.
