my son is in pre-k...this last term of school, they started sending home homework once or twice a week so they can get used to the idea. So, I guess that means there will be some sort of homework starting next year.

My daughter is in Pre-School and she even has homework at least once a week. My neice is in Kindergarten and when she lived with us, she came home with homework everyday. Simple homework, but it was homework. I always thought that all Kindergartens had homework to do, like a page at least.

Every school is different so it will just depend on the school your daughter goes to. My daughter is in kindergarten this year and she only had homework once a week, she has to write out the letter of the week in capital and small letters, then she has to find a picture in a magazine of something that starts with the letter of the week. It is fun and I am glad she doesn't have alot to do =) Bot I know a girl in kindergarden and she lives two house away from us, so still in Texas, but she gets homework every day!! So everywhere is different.

My experience with homework for kindergartens was that the sent little projects home for the parent and child to do together. The child didn't have to take them back. They were just fun little learning exercises for us to do together. It slows helps for when the child gets older and does bring home more serious homework.

Kindergarten now is more like first grade. Now, most districts have full day kindergarten and the children will be reading and writing by the time they leave and go to first grade. Homework in kindergarten is not unusual at all.

I teach and manage kindergartens here in Taiwan. It might be a little different from there. But, depending on what type of homework it is. Some readiness programs will give homework as prep for the fall like you said. But, some will give homework as a way for parents to communicate with their children. Here, we use homework as a way to let students have a bond with their parents in a learning matter, and also for parents to keep track of what their children are learning. But, the homework shouldn't be too difficult. At her age, she should be drawing and filling in colors, and other hands on stuff to help her with her motor skills and coordination.

When my daughter was in elementry school they had homework. It was little projects. Maybe they had to go over the alphabet. Most of the time it had to do with reading. I would have to read to her and then we had little books that she could read back to me. I seem to remember that she got rewarded for reading all through elementry school. The homework was very minor at this age wait til she gets in middle school and had to do Algebra. This was a problem.

We moved half way thru the school year. In my daughters first kindergarten class she got homework once or twice a week, but in her new kindergarten class she has only had one homework project in the 3 months she has been there. I miss the homework and think that homework a this age is a great idea! They are still young enough to enjoy the idea of doing something from school at home....with yoU! And its a good way to start the routine at a young age. As they get older they will be given homework much more and will already ahve a routine down. Come home from school, have snack, do homework, play etc.
