I used to be sales representative in a company, in my rookie year I have a hard time talking or conversing with my customer, specially talking to a one word answer person, but when I watch the other sales rep. they seems to have lot to talk about, so I try to talk to other sales rep. and analyze the way they talk, it is not that they know a lot topics but it's how they answer and ask question about their topic. Never ask a question that will answer only with yes or no, but ask with " how or why" like "how did it happen" you will able make a person to discuss or talk a lot more make a longer conversation, tell yourself a bit more like " my name is brat pit from the boundery of europe and asia " with little information he or she will in turn ask you question . Do you have other way talking or keep a converstion long?

As an EFL teacher, I get my students to make long conversations by using open ened questions and 5W's & 1H. Like you've stated. That is to ask questions without yes or no answers and using Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. As for sales, good sales people that I've met just kept asking them questions and let them talk about themselves and what they want. From there, they will devise a sales plan to make the sale. So, I would say asking good questions will make the conversations longer.
