A difficult question to answer. I think most politicians start out with high ideals and work hard for the people. Then as the years roll by they are offered incentives to make certain decisions which may not affect the people and may not be strictly be corruption. The may also find a few jobs for friends and relatives which may well be suited to their talents and who will do the job well. But there may well come a time in their political career when they do bad things which rob the people they were elected to serve. In the UK there are checks and balances where such corruption would surface and it has happened in the past. Those checks and balances are sometimes very unpopular with politicians because they show up bad decisions and inefficiency but they are a crucial part of a 'clean' government. If a government does not allow a strong opposition and a free press to keep them in line then corruption is inevitable.

I hope I don't offend anyone but I think by the time politicians reach a certain level og government office, they have had to compromise their principals. I think there are politicians that I still admire, like Kennedy, but at the same time, I think deals were done and there was a lot of behind closed doors happenings. I think it is an unnavoidable situation, no matter how idealistic and gren they start out. In the end, they end up jaded.
