I shudder at the thought of elections in any developing country. They are just invariably not free and fair. My country started on her series of general elections last Saturday. It has been an harrowing experience, with massive riggings, killings and maimings. Indeed, there have been curfews imposed in a number of the states since the atrocities we call elections here, started. People are already despondent and have despaired of any hope of any positive change. The reactionary forces have a firm grip on all the means of intimidation. There have been blatant and wanton riggings everywhere in favour of the regime that has held the people captive and pauperized for 8 years since the restoration of our so-called democracy in 1999. The leaders (or misrulers) appear to be the same all over the developing world. I am happy, however, to assume that your country is a bit ahead of us in political development and patriotic disposition of the leaders. On the strength of this assumption, I hope the outcome of your own elections would be as desirable as the majority of the people want it. I wish you peaceful and successful elections.

I think the only way to solve this problem is to have a good and quality education that is available for all so that as much as possible all those who are allowed to vote are educated people. People who can stand for their choice and ideals and can't be bought.
