whats the best way to keep a CD safe ???

i just keep the cds in a box but even after keeping them safely in a boc when i try to use them after a long time they don't work properly . Whats tha best way to keep them and what is the best way to clean them when they are not readable ??? hope somebody has a nice and simple solution to this general problem.
