Black mold???

Have any of you had the pleasure of dealing with black mold/toxic mold? I have recently found out that it is in my home and is causing me and my family health issues. When I informed the landlord they said "We can kill it with Bleach." With Bleach? I read that all that will do is kill the present mold, but cause the spores to go airborne and gather else where. Is that the answer? The damn landlord new there was a leak in my bathroom and come to find out has known for a year and a half. A year and a half? Why wasn't it fixed? Where do I stand legally on this matter? Do I have any legal standing? I am moving this weekend to get away from the slumlord, but they are talking about suing because I have a one year lease. What can I do? Does anyone know?

I don't know which country you are in but if it is the USA before you hand over the keys to the landlord when you move I would call the local Health Department and have them come and take a look at it. Bleach will take care of some types of black mold but other types it just increases it.

I am in the US, but in a small town and they don't have anyone that can help with this matter. I have called air quality, EPA, and the health department and have gotten nowhere. I don't know what to do. I did take picture's and also took a peice of the area that is infected with the mold and will hold on to both peice's of evidence. That still doesn't help me much. I feel that I am going to get screwed in the long run. Thank you for your advice though.

I would invite two parties: someone from health department and someone who knows lots of stuff about mold and can prove that it is present. There are mold testing kits I think. Check out this page for lots of good stuff on the subject: http://restoration-911.com/mold.php

It is possible to remove black mold with a bleach solution. Allow it to saturate for 15 minutes and then dry it well. Since you're moving though I gather you won't want to give it a try. I know here in Alberta, Canada, cases of black mold in rental units are judged on a case by case basis, although it's tricky since there's no real gauge for what an acceptable amount is. Try calling your local Landlord and Tenant board to figure out if you have a case or not.
