what course should i take in college?

i am planning to do B.E.Mechanical engineering.but others suggest me to take IT(information technology).my parents tell me to choose the same field of my father.and the main point everyone gives is if you start a new industry it is better to take B.com and then do my mba in a good university.what are your ideas?
