how to save money from your electric bills?

i have been paying too big for our electric bill! its like almost half of my money i worked for is destined to go for the bills! specially electric bill! i have not been using my aircon at home not unless its really hot and i only use my t.v. at night still i have this too much bill w2hich i think is not fair! do you think i have to make my electric meter checked?what should i do?
