I just got a message from a friend and she said she was enjoying the weekend. Don't ask me why but this thought came to my mind. When people refer to the weekend they are usually talking about Saturday and Sunday but I have always thought Sunday was the first day of the week so why is it included in weekend ?

The weekend is a part of the week lasting one or two days in which most paid workers do not work. I'd take Friday in lieu, but it's commonplace that Saturday and Sunday are typically the days off most paid workers in the western world get off. In Israel, the weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Funny discussion but you're so right. Officially Sunday is the first day of the week but for most people the first working day of their week is Monday so good old Sunday becomes part of the week"end". My weekend starts on Friday afternoon at around 5.30 and ends when I fall asleep on Sunday evening :( Awh I wish it was the weekend now LOL. x

It's the end of the working week for most people. First day of the working week is Monday. Most diaries have the pages arranged with Monday starting the week. My weekend starts 5pm Friday. haha

Weekend means spending with my family, since most part of the week; I am busy with work and did not spend enough time with my young kids. I am missing their growing up years. On Saturday, I spend the afternoon sending my elder girl to enrichments class and will bring the family out for dinner, some time; we will go to their favorite fast food restaurant - Macdonald for them to enjoy. On Sunday, we will spend most of the time at home, I will try to catch some sleep as well and do some reading with the kids and go for a walk in the park in the evening. At time, I will visit my parents and have dinner at their house, letting the kids spend some time with the old folks.

I agree, here in Oz we class Sunday as the first day of the week - however in Germany, for example, their week starts on the Monday so technically Sunday is the very last day. Doesn't it make you wonder why in some countries it's the first day of the week & others have it as the last. I'd also like to know, who set it to be like that & why all countries don't have the same day set up!

I would say Monday is the first day of the week. Sunday is a weekend day because people don't usually work where as Monday is the first day in the working week. I think of the weekend as Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Because i have all that time to relax and do what i please.
