Is America becoming mediocre?

A friend and I were recently discussing the 2004 Presidential election and decided that if out of 300 million people John Kerry and George W. Bush Jr. are the best we can do America is in serious trouble. Look at all the people who are famous in today's society. Is our empire in jeopardy? Can we save it or is it too late?
