hate is not the oppposite of love.

Yes, your theology teacher has a point. Love is showing care and therefore the opposite is no care shown at all. But love is broaded than just showing care. But sometimes also, even if you hate somebody, you still love him. That happens even to spouses - sometimes they like even to kill each other and hate each other so much but afterwards, they realize that they still love each other. It's really difficult to define love so sometimes they say that love is a many splendored thing.
