Uh oh! Do work crews outside your house or on your street scare you?

I am petrified when they pull up because inevitably something goes horribly wrong. Last year the town experienced a lot of commotion when the Powers That Be chose the lowest bidder who wasn't exactly up to the job. By the time they were done with their "improvements", they had caused a small gas pipe explosion, we had lost water twice, and all the surface sewers needed to be dredged because they had made such a mess people's drainage systems were backing up. Now they are back. It's a different company, but it didn't bode well when on leaving the house this morning one of the crew asked me if we had a gas line running into the house. What? What! They had already started digging! Don't they have maps and schemaics and check this stuff before the haul out the jack hammers? God love them, but they are menaces! By lunch time, for some reason, we had lost the cold water in the kitchen, but not the hot tap and everything in the bathroom seems to be working. Do other people get to have this much fun/excitement/fear when their town decides to provide 'upgrades'? I would love to hear I am not alone in this!

Yes, they should get their little maps out. I could hardly believe it. It is 8:30 PM and they are still out there jackhammering away and pouring tarmac back into what they jackhammerup up. At least it should keep the door to door beggars away.

I don't have that problem much as I'm out in the sticks, but we do have power outages alot because of high winds blowing tree branches over to knock down power lines. A lot of people get in accidents on the main road here too, and when they hit one of the poles, that knocks out the power. Last week we had some really bad wind, and trees were down in a lot of places. Our power was out, and I called the electric company who gave an estimate of 2 hours to get it fixed. It took over 5 hours to get the power back. I really hate losing power here, because I can't even run the water without it. It always takes much longer for them to fix than what their estimates are.

No kidding. I don't even know why they bother giving estimates. We have had phones down for more than two weeks several times.

I have felt such a pain, we are currently living in a house that had been lived in for the prior two years by a bitter woman who was unhappy she did not get the house in the divorce, now everything is broken and everything is dirty and we had to pull up all the carpet and the house is so big and there is so much wrong that we have been at a crossroads on what to fix first. I finally got cold water in the kitchen where I did have to scald my hands from washing the dishes all day, since the dishwasher was trashed. We got most of the lights working but there are still many that don't turn on, we have to have a electrician come in a replace some switches. We have 1 bathroom working on a full time basis with 5 people to use, we are hoping the other 2 might be up and working soon, but we are waiting for the plumber to come and tell us how that is going to cost. We are currently working on leveling the backyard and getting the sprinklers up and running again, they seemed to have all been broken. I am thinking in a few years this house might be liveable for more than just us and we might be able to invite others over and not be embarrashed. I would love upgrades, but right now I am just looking for something that works right.

Oh, that is even worse! I would hate having these guys trapsing in and out of the house and leaving their crap everywhere. As is there is one on a mini- digger who is right outside the window of the room I am sitting in and Ibet he woners what the hell I am doing at the computer when I ought to be baking or scrubbing or what have you. The noise is fairly incredible, too. I won't miss them when they go, I just hope they don't blow anything up like the last crew!
