Do You Read To Your (Child)ren?

Canada

Some of my fondest memories from when my daughter was younger (she's a teen now), are of us sitting together (often at bedtime) reading a book. Having just asked her what her favourites were, I thought I'd list them here. These were read when she was at the grade 1 - 4 level (approximately). Hilda Crumm's Hats by Linda Hendry. Ruby the Copycat by Peggy Rathmann. * Maya's New Dress ... I couldn't find this one online, so if anyone knows the author, please share. One of 'my' personal favourites was Miss Nelson Is Back by Harry Allard and James Marshall ... we still have a copy of this one. I invite you to share your favourite children's books, either your child's, yours, or both. If you can list the author too, that'd be great, as many of these can be purchased online. Maybe a title, or description, will interest you, and your family can add a new favourite to their collection. Thanks for sharing ... happy reading!

Thanks again winterose. I used to get the Grolier books when my daughter was little. All in all, we had a huge collection of books of all types.

Thanks, winterose ... reading to kids is so very important, and is a given, if a parent's interest lies in that area. Classic children's literature is special. Another favourite author of my daughter's was Robert Munsch ... he's an amazing talent.

Yes I do. Reading is one of my passions. I enjoy reading so I read as much as I can to my kids. I want them to grow up with the same passion for reading that I have. My stepson hates reading. He has to for school and he complains all the time about it. So I don't want my kids to be that way. Reading is so relaxing and one of the best ways to learn.

I understand your passion for reading, and wanting to share this with your kids. I spent a great deal of time reading as a kid, and often 'couldn't put the book down.' It's not surprising that your stepson hates reading, as it seems to 'sometimes ... not always,' be 'a boy thing.' I have a grown stepson too, who's always hated to read, and also a nephew (now a teen), who can't stand it either.

I used to read to my children every night before bed. We would all have so much fun. We used finger puppets and in one book there was a frog on a lilypad which flew about and kept the kids in fits of laughter. I miss those times so instead we watch dvds together before bed so we still get to have our quality time. The one with the frog was called "Three O'clock in the Morning" another good one was "Catch that Fly".

Finger puppets are a lot of fun, and we also had some pop-up type, or other interactive books as well. Watching dvd's is a good family passtime too. Thanks for sharing the book titles with us, they sound great!

I began reading to my daughter and telling her stories when she was just an infant. I am a huge reader so I wanted to make sure that she grew up loving reading also. When she was about 4 I even wrote a story for her that I personalized with her name and our address. We would read this togehter so she could leran our address. the story also helped her learn the basic colors. She loved that book. Over the years we have read many diferent types of books. She is 9 now and really loves the Magic Tree House books. When she was younger she was really into Dr Suess, in fact she still loves those. I try to make sure that she has a large variety of books. She has her own bookcase full of books and she reads a little every night. We even have some poetry books designed for children because I wanted her to appreciate poetry. I really think fostering a love of reading is one of the most important things a parent can do for their children.

When I found out I was pregnant I decided right then and there that I would do everything I could to raise a reader, so I actually started reading to her when she was still in me. I just never stopped. I would make up stories and write poems about her. I would do anything to make sure that she developed a love of words. Here is a link to an article I wrote about rasing a reader: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/59993/raising_a_reader.html Now at age 9 there are times that she comes out and reads to me. I am so thrilled with that. She needs to work on following the punctuation but other than that she is a great reader. She reads to the younger kids at her school also. She has quite an imagination too and I think a lot of that has to do with her love of reading.

Thanks sunnypub, I'll check out the article. It's great that you read to her even before she was born. That really takes a lot of dedication, when it comes to desiring to raise a reader. Are you by any chance a professional writer, aside from your article? Thanks again, for your thoughtful response, and comments.

You're the 2nd person to mention that you told stories, and read to your child when an infant. I think this is wonderful. How old was your daughter when you were doing this? I'd also like to commend you for writing a book for her. My daughter loved the Magic Tree House books at that age too, and also had a full bookcase in her room, back then, including some poetry books. She's an avid reader today, at almost 16, so I agree that it's one of the important elements of parenting too.

My son is now six yrs old, when he was one and a half year,i began to tell stories to him before he went to sleep. Now he has learned some words and can spell almost all chinses words by pin yin. Telling stories for him is my routine at every night, sometimes i want him to read by himself for a few lines, then read for him. Yes,it is really pleasure time reading with kids.

It's wonderful that you told your son stories at such a young age. I'm sure that has something to do with his enjoyment of reading now. I agree, reading is a great bedtime routine, and is most enjoyable.

My daughter is just turning 3 years old this June but she loves it when I read her books. As of now she loves the classic fairy tales of Snow White, Cinderella, and the likes. Of course since she cant read yet, I also bought her books which she can use by herself by just looking at the pictures. The simple ABC's. learn how to counts are just also her favorites! Maybe when she's older enough and can read books by herself, Ill buy her more.

We definitely enjoyed these classics as well, and they're too numerous to mention here. My daughter loved ABC's and counting books too, at a younger age. I'm sure you'll end up with quite a collection, as we did, through all of the stages of growth.

I am an avid reader so I make sure that I read to my toddler and am just so lucky she enjoys it. I began reading her since she was a baby, starting with "Goodnight Moon" until she talks and wanted to read the story by herself (which she just memorized). We moved into Sesame Street, Disney, any picture books. Now she is 3, she is into the Disney Princesses and Barbie books. I am expecting so what I read to her now every night is, "A Room In My Heart" for the expectant Mom and older siblings. This is quite nice because she grasp the conceot that soon, there will be a new baby coming in the house, but she will always have that special room in my heart that nobody can replace. She loves this book.

Goodnight Moon seems to be a favourite among many. We read Sesame Street, Disney, and Barbie books too. Best Wishes on the upcoming arrival of your second child. It's great that these type of books are available now, for parents to share, to prepare them for a new baby in the house.

I'm trying to recall just ONE favorite. I used to love this one called "It Will All Come Out in the Wash" and my sister loved "My Dolly" ah memories! I would defently read to my kids when I have any. My mom read to me a lot growing up all the time. I began to read at 4 yrs, I made it to G.A.T.E. program for smart kids in the 2nd-7th grade. So I believe reading at a young age made me smarter and helped me read sooner and LOVE reading even now. So defently read to your kids. You never what the affects it will have on them for the future! :))

The two books you've mentioned are new ones to me, but they sound great for kids, just by the titles. Congratulations on reaching the special program in your school. I agree with you, that reading to kids at a young age, has a positive affect on their future.

I love to read and I always read to my child- She is 10 now and I sometimes still read to her- We take turns in her books.. She will read one page to me and then I read the next to her. It's fun and it gets her reading- Reading is a major key to your childs success. She loved the Little house on the Prarie books & anything Pooh & Tigger... Now she reads American Girl, and lots of other series.

It's wonderful to read to older children to, as my daughter and I shared the 'reading duties,' once she was able to do so. We loved watching videos of the Little House series, and my daughter read all of the books on her own. Winnie the Pooh ... another favourite.

I've read to my daughter since she was an infant and I believe that's why she has taken an interest in books early in life. She's now 5 years old and can read all on her own. But she still wants me to read to her at bedtime and sometimes insist that we read her book together. She loves princess stories and has a lot of books on Disney Princesses. I remember buying a lot of books when she was barely a year old when during a bookstore sale. I'm glad that I've passed on to her the love for reading which my dad also passed on to me when I was young. He is a voracious reader and I'm only thankful that he taught me the importance of being well read. I believe that the bonding experience being brought about by both 'reading to' and 'reading with' our children is priceless, and that gives them fond memories to cherish for a long time. I highly recommend and encourage all parents to do it because it's well worth it. :)

It's so great to see those who started reading to their infants. We loved the Disney ones as well, and they were the all time favourites of my niece, when she was little. There are far too many great books to mention. Reading is such an important aspect of being a parent, to me, and it does create lasting memories, as you've said.

I try to read to my son. He is almost four and has autism so it is often hard to get him to sit while I read... I must say, he loves Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault. He also likes to watch the Dr Seuss stories on video that we have! I am proud tosay that I have often caught him looking through his books on his own in his room as we have many for him to choose from. I love to read and am a firm believer in fostering this in our children...Wish me luck! :) Thanks for the thread someonesmom!

I commend you for attempting to read to your son, and am glad that there's a book that he really enjoys. Dr. Seuss is great too. You've done a good thing by giving him a variety of books for him to choose from, and it shows interest (and hope for you) on his part, because he's looking through his books. All the best to you, and your family ... you're welcome.

I read to my son everyday and we both absolutely love it. I wouldn't miss that special time of day for the world. My son sees my husband and I read a lot and as a result we catch him pretending to read very often. I think I am raising a reader and I am very happy about that.

I read to my son when I am available to, most of the time before he goes to bed. His favorite books are ones with curious george in it, he also loves the ones that have zoo animals in them. I love reading to him, because its fun to make the voices. Reading to your children is good for them because they learn how to talk by listening to you, its really nice.

Bedtime is when we did a lot of our reading too. Curious George is great, and was around when I was a kid. It's lots of fun to do voices with the stories, and we have good memories of that as well.
