Any info on filing bankrupcty?

I live in Maine with my husband and two children... The jobs around here dont pay the best and the state is reluctant to help out, so needless to say we are in debt up to our eyeballs and have trouble just paying our rent and electric bill... We have been talking about the big "B" word, you know Bankruptcy. We just dont know how much it cost and the repercussions we will have slapped on us for filing. I am looking for some good advise on where to get started and what steps I have to take and a rough price on the costs...I mean we are broke so it is kind of an oxymoron to use that is costs money to file bankruptcy --seeing how you can pay you bills as it is. Thanks in advance for the insight :)
