I got into a heated debate today with a friend over the story about a little old lady who was shot and killed by police in GA. She was 92. And she didn't have drugs in her home. The police were following a no knock policy and truly what they found when they entered was a scared little old lady who fired a gun at the plains clothes police officers. They proceeded to kill her dead. They are now facing 10 years for manslaughter charges as well as falsifying police reports and the like. The person I was talking to said that old people shouldn't be able to own guns. I of course turned the conversation into a debate about the constitution and discovered that truly the 2nd Amendment doesn't say we can have guns for self protection but rather as a standing militia. OK so I then turned to the 9th amendment, and the superior court rulings that of course have upheld that yes citizens can have guns to protect themselves. There are states that are more lenient than others with these laws. And in District of Columbia, you can't even own a gun for protection, and of course it has an extremely high murder rate. But I digress... We also discussed the Virginia Tech killings within the same context. I have heard it stated on a number of occasions that had the students or teachers been allowed to carry weapons onto college campuses that the story would have turned out much different. So on the one hand my friend thinks that old people should lay down their weapons and young people should go around armed to the teeth. I'm not sure how that all plays out in my mind. I told my friend that all Americans should be required by law to own and carry a concealed weapon, just like clothes, and then maybe everyone would be a little more polite. What are your thoughts? Should old people hang up their six shooters and let the young people pick em up? Lets talk!
