I met my wife through a type of dating site. Strangely enough neither of us was looking for a relationship at the time, I stumbled across the site when I was looking for information about the country that she comes from, she had her profile on there thanks to her aunt who had put it on there without her knowing. She eventually contacted me just to say hello, we didn't chat or anything for a few few weeks, just an email maybe once a week to say hello, how you doing. This soon became more regular emails and then we were chatting once a week on messenger, then once every few days, then every day. The more we chatted, the more we fell for each other. I went to visit her and the rest, as they say, is history. We have been married now since November 2005, we love each other very dearly and will be together for the rest of our lives. In answer to your question, yes it can be a good way to meet, but the communication and honesty has to be there from the start, and I believe that I am very, very lucky to be so happy, I don't think a lot of relationships develop as well as ours has done.
