Thanksgiving

I read a book,it simply told Thanksgiving was about the Pilgrams,the first settlers in Amarecia,they shared the first harvest with the Indians.But I don't know exactly the meaning of thanksgiving.Can you tell me if you know more about it?Thank you very much.
