I am the beginning of sorrow, and the end of sickness. You cannot express happiness without me, yet I am in the midst of crosses. I am always in risk, yet never in danger. You may find me in the sun, but I am never out of darkness Please don't look up the answer, it ruins the fun. Thank you!

The tone of this riddle is quite well known used in many riddles. so i am taking my chance that you are talking about "S", however if it's not right then tell me, i'll think of some other logical answer to your riddle.
