Really loose weight and get in shape if they try really hard. Or will a person maybe loose the weight but still have baggy skin?? Can that be prevented? Or is this something that will happen to anyone who looses a lot of weight. I am wondering because I need to loose a lot of weight and I am thinking that if I do manage to loose weight I will have a lot of excess skin, and I can not afford to have surgery to fix that either. Is there a real way to prevent excess skin when you loose a lot of weight?? If so what is it??

The excess skin can be different for you than for other people. It is all depended on your age, how often you exercise and the elasticity in your skin. I know people that have lost 40 or 50 and pounds and you could never even tell that they had been heavier. And then there are those who have a lot of hanging skin. I think that this is one of my fears as well. I hate the thought of surgery, not to mention the cost of it and I hope that it is not something I have to deal with. How old are you? I am assuming you are a woman because of your name. Am I correct? If you are (and please be *fingers crossed*), how much elasticity do you have in your "chest"? That is a good measure of how your skin will react over time. But like I said, it can be different for each person going through weight loss what will happen to their skin. Make sure to do toning exercises through out your weight loss. It will help. Good luck!

I'm not sure how much elasticity I have. I have had five full term babies, and two late miscarriages and at least one early miscarriage. And I have a very bad scar from a c-section. And I have a lot to loose. I used to be very fit and very small but not any more, Now I am a size 22 and weight about 270 which is not good at my height. I want to get back into a size seven, and I want to be able to exercise more, but I have a hard time right now because I hurt all the time, probably because of the weight. (most people who meet me do not believe I weigh as much as I do, but I really do. And I hate it.) I have several hormonal problems causing this weight and I barely eat anything, I am hoping that I will get things straightened out when I see the doctor this coming week, he will be putting me on several medications so maybe I will start loosing weight. I have a friend that is very skinny and she eats more in one day than I eat in a week. But then she does not have a hormonal problem and she moves around a lot more.

5 kids. Wow, you're body has been through a lot! I hope all goes well with the doctor. I completley understand the hormonal imbalance/issues associated with the weight. I have gone through it myself. The key to it all is to move. I know it hurts and you don't have to over do it, but move. Talk to your doctor about what they suggest as far as exercise goes. My doctor told me to walk for 10 minutes a day. When that was comfortable and bearable to go for 15 minutes. Add keep adding to it over time. I do a lot of basic exercises at home also. Crunches, arm curls, wall push ups, squats, lunges - and I add to it when I can. I tried to go full force at it and I failed. Sometimes that works for people. Some times youjust have to take it slow. I hope everything works out for you.

Thanks. I hope that will be able to get in shape soon. I am tired of being so heavy. I can walk some but I need to walk a lot more. I have chest pains easily and I think that is because of my weight mostly. Anyway, it is aggravating to be eatting next to nothing and be so heavy and tired all the time. I believe I have slowed my metabalism down so it is barely working...

I have a relative whose worked for weight watchers for quite some time. People who have been extremely over weight for a long period of time do tend to have stretched out skin. They each have it to different degree's however, and it is based a lot on age as well as genetics. I've noted that often after losing a lot of weight people do look much better, but they look older too, especially if there is a lot of extra hanging skin as you mentioned. It can be corrected with surgery, and the effects may lessen over time, I'm really not sure. Regardless you should not let this be a deterring factor in your goal to lose weight. Because you will look and feel a lot better. Medically, it's in your best interest anyway. Best of luck to you.

Thanks, maybe loose skin will tighten up over time. As there is no way I can see that I can afford surgery anytime soon. I would like to be healthy though so I am going to keep trying to loose weight thru diet and exercise. And I need to remember to drink water,

A lot has to do with one's age, and how much weight they are taking off. To avoid the baggie skin, you must loose the weight slowly, and do exercise. If it is a lot of weight to loose, you should contact the doctor on the best way to do it. Good luck honey.
