Do you give to the poor?

I was wondering just how many of us actually give money to those we see sitting by stop signs at intersections and in the parking lots of dept. stores & grocery parking lots. They will be holding a sign asking for money and looking very dirty and homeless. I have given money before, but I sometimes wonder if they are on the take or really need the money. It's hard to trust anyone these days, I do try and say a prayer for them. It breaks my heart, but so many out in the world try to scam others, if I really know someone needs something I have I am more than generous to help them. How do you feel about these situations?

I have a friend who picked up one of these guys. The man has his dog with him. He basically stated that this is how he lives, and he has a regular route and is in certain towns certain months. My general response is to give food, if anything. We do have a young 30 ish person who lives in town, chooses (so I am told) not to live with her family, and lives on the streets. I do not know how she cares for herself in the winter, in the summer she washes her hair and stuff in the bathrooms in the park. She has regular spots in town where she goes, but does not ask for handouts. People tend to give her food.

I just don't understand how a person would want to live like this and not want better for themselves. But then I have never had to be in a situation like that before either.

Hi, Oh no they are not allowed to put up signs where I live but a lot of them will be wearing a badge, or something to say who they are representing and I have given many times to the poor, sometimes they will be on the take and probably have more money than you and me but it gives me a good feeling believing that I am helping someone else so yes I have given to the poor and will continue to do so as I understand how it feels to have nothing.

I feel good too when I help someone. But I always wonder if they are really needing it or just trying to scam others.

I don't carry a purse, so when I'm in the car, I usually don't have any money on me. I carry my debit card if I need something. I've given food to those in need before.

No I don't usually hand out any money....I am the poor...lol I have though when I've seen people with a sign saying "will work for food or money" given them food and water. I even bought a bag of dog food for one man that had adopted a puppy he found. My friend also brought a homeless man to her house to help clean before moving she took him to the store afterward and bought him 50.00 worth of groceries and though he didn't ask she also bought 10 boxes of diapers and a case of formula for his baby. She drove him home which would have been a 5 mile walk from town. They had no phone but could use a neighbors for emergencies. So she left her phone number in case they needed help or to call once a week and see if she had work for him... She found him a job with a ride a week later and they remain friends to this day...It's nice when you can help someone and it really helps.

I don't tend to donate in those instances. I do donate to the Salvation Army bellrings at Christmas and also when the Lion's Club have buckets out in front of stores. I've had to go to the Salvation Army for help on a couple of occasions and it was a real blessing. They make sure you need it but don't make you feel bad for it, ya know? I want to know that the money is going to help someone that really needs it and that it gets used the way it is supposed to. I'm to cynical, I guess. I've been to some really low places in my life (even had to live in my car for a while) but never to the point to where I'd hold a sign and beg like that.

If they come up to me and I do have spare change then I do give it to them. I have only been approached twice, once on the street and once in Macdonalds they asked for $2 and I gave it. I didn't even ask why they needed it but by his appearance I figured he needed it more than I did.

I have done it before, but I am so aware of people who are not real....who are scammers. I usually give to people who I know are in need...working with homeless children. There are charities that I really trust that I help.

They don't have that bad of a time here at all, there are special jobs for homeless people available which they should simply do rather than going around begging so no. I don't give them anything for begging. I sometimes to buy the homeless paper and such from the ones doing some work for some money though, just to support them to keep on doing it.
