Does anyone have the recipe for a realy good irish soda bread?

The sour cream is not necessary, but makes a better texture bread." INGREDIENTS * 4 cups all-purpose flour * 2/3 cup white sugar * 1/2 cup margarine * 5 teaspoons baking powder * 2 eggs * 1 teaspoon baking soda * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 2 tablespoons caraway seed * 2 1/2 cups raisins * 2 cups buttermilk * 3 tablespoons milk (optional) * 3 tablespoons sour cream (optional) DIRECTIONS 1. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Use fingers or a pastry cutter to press in butter or margarine, like a pie crust. When mixture looks fine and crumbly, add raisins and caraway seeds. Mix together and then add eggs, buttermilk, and sour cream. If mixture is not moist, add milk. Pour into two greased and lightly floured loaf pans or a frying pan. 2. Pour dough onto lightly floured board. Shape into a round loaf, adding flour if necessary. Place in a lightly greased springform pan. Sprinkle top with caraway seeds if desired. 4. i havent read the previous posts so hopefully this isnt a repeat. Ingredients 3 cups all purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/3 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 egg lightly beaten 2 cups buttermilk 1/4 cup melted butter DIRECTIONS 1) Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan 2) combine flour,sugar,salt,baking powder. Blend egg and buttermilk together, and add all at once to the flour mixture. Mix just until moistened, Stir in butter, Pour into prepared pan. 3) bake for 65 to 70 mintues or until a toothpick inserted into the bread comes out clean. cool on wire wrack and let cool. Serve as desired.

try this. 1 lb wholemeal flour 4oz plain flour 2oz rolled oats 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 3 quarters of a pint (450ml) buttermilk Combine the flour, oats, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.add enough bittermilk to form a soft dough and turn out into a lightly floured board . knead the dough very lightly and do not over work.or breadwill develop gluten and become tough.shape into a large round and place on a greased baking tray cut a deep croos in the top of the round.bake at 450 F/200C for 20-25 min. until load sounds hollow when tapped underneath.eat whilst still warm.

this site has a great recipe and article about soda bread: http://www.irishabroad.com/Culture/Kitchen/Recipe.asp?RcpID=37 the recipe is a lot like my mom's only she'd put in raisins sometimes (yech) if it was for brunch, sauteed onions if it was for dinner with soup or beef. Now I'm craving soda bread, too! :)
