I have read one article in the Readers Digest that lighting a candle beside you when chopping an onion will eliminate tears in your eyes. Do you believe on this or have you tried it before? What do you think is the reason behind this since it was not further discuss in the article. Does lighting a candle beside you when chopping onions won't make you cry?

I have never heard of lighting a candle beside you while you chop onions will stop you from crying. I guess I will have to try it and see if it actually works. I have actually put an onion in the freezer for fifteen minutes before I went to chop it. I can honestly say that putting the onion in the freezer works. Thanks for sharing.

this is another tip as to how not to cry when chopping onions. i have never heard either about keeping them in the refrigerator will do the trick. starting tomorrow, i will refrigerate the onions for 15 minutes before chopping.

hmm... that may be because lit candles do collect scents/odors around them. I remember my aunt (i detest het though... for many reasons), she once advised me to light a candle while frying strong-smelling dishes like dried fish or smoked fish, because candles eliminate odors. And it is believed that the odor of an onion while we are cutting it is the one that makes us shed tears, and not its juice. See how candles are being displayed on toilets too, and in living rooms... they seem to really freshen the rooms.. have you tried them?

candles are therefore good for freshening rooms. i will resume buying candles again then. i have stopped using them because they are known to have started some home fires.

i have never tried this trick before. it is best that we experiment on it. next time that i will be slicing onions, i will have a lighted candle going at my side. that will be the time that i can attest to the truth or untruth of this cooking tip.

Onions - Onions and Candles
i guess the candle's flame will burn away the gaseous sulphuric compounds coming from the onion before they burn our eyes and made us cry.

I never heard about that yet. But, I think I got to try that. My teacher once told me that you have to blow towards the onions while cutting it, so that the moist that it produced will not reach your eyes.
