Are elected politicians truly representative of the population?

I certainly hope not! Even though I'm sorry to say so, it seems as if every time I open the paper there's a half dozen stories of politicians being involved in scandals of some sort. Yes, I understand there's a good deal of the population that is dirty, but I'd like to assume it isn't the majority; however, without question, the majority of politicians are in fact corrupt to some extent. Does anybody agree or feel differently?
