What Does Being a Manager Mean To You?

is it (A) I'm higher up in the pecking order so I don't have to deal with the problems that come up. I have underlings to do that for me so I can leave when I want and not worry about whether or not stuff is taken care of. (B) The buck stops with me. My subordinates count on me to handle any crisises that arise and turn to me in times of need. I have to be available to handle issues that arise and anticipate when they might happen. If there might be a problem, I should be there to handle it or at least be right alongside them.

To me, being a manager means taking on the responsibility to handle whatever situation may need to be dealt with. It means taking on the leadership role, and leading those who work under your guidance towards whatever goals you need to accomplish, together. It does not mean standing back and letting them take the fall for what isn’t done. It means making sure that you all work together to achieve a common goal.

I agree. I don't seem to run into managers who feel the same way though. The last two jobs I have had in the corporate world (as opposed to working for non-profits) I had bosses who thought that they could do things like tell employees they had to stay during a snowstorm but they went home. It gets frustrating seeing the same thing again and again int he corporate climate :-(

Thankfully, most managers I have had to deal with have not been quite as bad as the ones you have described. Some are better than others are, although many seem to expect much more from the other employees than they are willing to do themselves.

To me a manager is a babysitter that has to run around and stop fights and bickering. A manager also has to make sure that there is toilet paper in the bathroom, the Brita water container is filled, there are snacks for everyone, shoes and tied and everyone has clean underwear on. Being a manager is a lot like being a mom, it's a thankless job but let one small thing go wrong and everyone knows your name!

ROFL - that is funny! One manager I had a while ago instigated fighting between people at work. She said that it promoted competition and discouraged people from wasting time when they hated each other!
