Navigator must sit in the front seat?

This is something that happens among my friends very often. We want to go somewhere but the driver doesn't know how to get there and needs one of us to be a navigator. So the driver asks the navigator to sit in the front seat. If someone is already seated in front, then that person will be asked to vacate the seat so that the navigator can sit there.
Personally, I really don't think it's necessary to do so. I feel that a person would be able to navigate just as well even when sitting behind. I've been able to do so as well.
Do you always insist that the navigator must sit in the front? Have you been asked to vacate your front seat so that the navigator can sit in front? Is it really necessary for the navigator to sit in front? Please share your stories. Thanks.

It is a must for navigator to be seated next to the driver. Sitting behind and navigating will not help the driver properly.
