The American Dream and Poverty in America

United States

I actually did a paper on this last semester, but I just thought of it again and I wanted to rant. So, forgive me if it's a little disorganized, but I am getting pretty tired. What is the "American dream?" I've seen a few people ask that same question. Well, from the very beginning, people imigrated to the United States looking for religious and personal freedom. They looked to the Americas for newfound wealth and glory. After the United States was formed, immigrants were still pouring into the country to try to make a better life for themselves. Therefore, I believe the true "American Dream" was to work hard and become successful. There are a lot of "rags to riches" stories. Those are the people who lived the "American dream." We don't see a whole lot of that today. One of my biggest pet peeves is thinking about the government policies on poverty. I was looking up information for my paper on poverty in America and you know what I found? "Poverty" does not mean living out on the streets with barely anything to eat. In fact, the average person who qualifies for all those government benefits because they are labled "poor" have 2 televisions, cable, and internet along with plenty of food to feed 2 families. Is that right?! The families recieving these benefits also get paid more for the number of children that they have. The middle class American who works hard for their money and is financially responsible has to wait to be able to afford a child, while these "poor" families are being paid to have children. What's even better is that they are being DISCOURAGED from working. Once they get a job, their benefits are greatly reduced. Often times the job doesn't cover the amount that the government took away. So, basically, the government is PAYING people to be unemployed and to reproduce children. Often times, while these people are sitting home with nothing to do, collecting disability for being overweight due to not having to move out of the house, they turn to drugs to occupy their time. So, while reproducing, they are harboring these children in a drugged up environment. How is that for the future of America. The government policies on poverty has truly crushed the American dream as it once was. Now, the American dream has become, "how much money can we get for the least amount of work we can do." That's pathetic. I believe it was Michigan who had a better approach to poerty. The government would pay the people who qualified as poor to work in community service situations. Why hasn't that spread? People should be encouraged to work for their benefits. They should be encouraged to only use these benefits for temporary use while they are getting back up on their feet. If the government could cut back on all the unneccesary handouts to the "poor," maybe we could have the money to actually pay our teacher, improve the schools and education to HELP the future of our country. I honestly believe that if the country keeps going in the direction it's headed now, we won't last another 200 years. Anyone have any thoughts to add? Anyone wish to tell me I'm wrong? Most importantly, I want to know how I can get these ideas to someone who can do something about it! How can I do that?Thank you for the time you took to read all of that. Please post. I believe this is a really important topic that could make a difference in our future.

I understand your RAGE I too was once a young impressionable Conservative. I was raised " correctly " in a conservative Family. But here's the Dilemma....Untill life comes crashing down on you , through no Fault of your own, because you were doing everything you had been raised to do...untill life Demands a little more from you and you had to walk a mile in anyone else's shoes....it's very easy to judge. So....Take a look at what's really going on in this country. We have lost all of our rights , since Sept. 11 th Government is now more in your face , then it has ever been. Take a look at all of your Major American corps. Leaving ( in droves ) because they're selling out to Dubaii. The last thing anyone should be concerned about is Welfare and other Social programms. I am very proud to call my self a Democrat. it's the Democrats that will stand up for you at your Union meetings , when the compassionate Conservatives take your livelihood away ( over seas ) to Dubaii to continue their quest to Conquer the world.

Well, it looks as though you digressed. The reason you are now a LIB is because you allowed yourself to be duped and seduced. You're spouting rhetoric and that sound is so annoying.

' Gosh...how can anyone argue with that Logic??? This is where I, and my Free-thinking Family have Digressed! After Katrina-Gate....My Husband took two-weeks off, from his 7-day a week butt, busting job. He drove, from N.East Ohio ( you know....a " Red " state ) all the way to Devestated Louisiana, with guidence from his group the Fellow-ship of Christian-Farmers. He Delivered One-ton of Hay to these Farmers, whom were losing livestock, on an hourly-Basis... That Delivery of Hay was not even a drop in the Bucket....But the Farmers were Grateful....you know why? Because their President..wasn't/ isn't doing anything for them. They told my Husband so..and these are people, which are steeped in The Republican Ideology. Bare in Mind...this effort cost my husband over $ 1, 000.00 His reward was Knowing that he may have given some Farmers another-day untill...they could get help down in their region. It's easy to judge a Book By it's cover....But have the courage to listen to both view points . I do not espouse rhetoric . I do not need Liberal/ or Conservative talking heads to give me my Marching orders. I March to My own Drum. I have been on both sides of the Fence. Conservatives are steeped in dreams of what they feel are important issues ... God Bless ' em . Liberals are doers. We're the oil in the gears. There has to be A willingness to come together..... This administration , has done nothing , save divide the good people of this country. It's not North Versus South...It's the Extremely wealthy , against the extremely poor. This is an absolute true Observation by myself. Turn off your Radio , turn off your T.V. Look at the world around you.

Your husband is a great person. I'm sure he touched a whole lot of lives. I'm also open to other people's ideas... As I've said... I don't even know/understand the terms liberl/conservative/right/left/red/blue... I don't know a lot. And Looking at the world around me is definitely a scary thought. Since graduating highschool (2 years ago) I have been exposed to a world I never knew. I know i still have a lot to learn.

I'm with you there! I know plenty of people who bust their butts, raising kids, have a job and go to college. They are the ones who should be supported.

Poverty is inescapable for many, but it is hard to determine who should receive help to let them make their lives better and who wont be able to improve their lives at all.

The way the government helps the poor is so wrong. I think there should be more job training. Help them get a job, so they don't become lazy and collect a check. I have a sister that collects a check, she works her butt off, has a young daughter, but has a bum for a husband. With there situation, I think he should be forced to get a job or lose the welfare. My family and I work so hard, I couldn't even get WIC when my youngest was a infant, because my husband made to much. Funny how you make to much for help, but barely surviving in the real world. Wic should be given to every woman that's pregnant and when the child is a baby. American Dream my butt, it's more like pop out kids, get on welfare and never work again for some people not all. People sit and wonder why Mexicans are coming to the states like cattle, Americans have gotten lazy. They want that quick buck, and they want it given to them for free. While people from Mexico will work there butts off for anything. Now they should do it legally, pay taxes, the whole nine yards. People with certain jobs are being underpaid. For example Teachers, police officers and firemen, and most of all the enlisted in the military, etc. I think welfare should be done with. To many people are abusing it is not even funny anymore. Now there should be help for our elderly. They shouldn't have to suffer because they are old. Instead of handing out money, make them go to job training, give food. You give a person 20 bucks, and honestly, do you think all that money will go towards food. I think if that happens, the welfare system will slowly fade out. We should all write a letter to our Senators or anyone that will listen. Again I don't see anything being done, reason, America has gotten Lazy, greedy, and they lust for more greed. This country is so backwards it's not even funny. Movie stars and sports players making millions to stand around and say a few lines or play with a ball for a few hours. So backwards.
