Roseola

My son has been sick for about 5 days now. He had an extremely high fever and today he developed a rash. I called his Dr. and he confirmed that my baby boy has Roseola. He literally has every symptom. Have you ever had a child with Roseola? What did you do to make them feel more comfortable?

I have not seen a kid with roseola. There is nothing much you can do apart from treatment of this disease caused by a virus. The roseola fever can be managed with acetaminophen (such as Tylenol or Panadol), ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin), or sponge baths. Do not give aspirin to anyone younger than 20 years of age because of the risk of Reye's syndrome. The roseola rash will go away without medical treatment. Roseola generally is a harmless viral infection. Like any illness that can cause a fever, it can cause fever seizures, which are uncontrolled muscle spasms and unresponsiveness that last 1 to 3 minutes. They are seldom serious. The fever seizure is caused by the rapid increase in temperature in a short period of time. Once a fever has reached a high temperature, the risk of a seizure is probably over. Fever seizures are not a form of epilepsy. Contact your health professional if: Your child's rash worsens. Symptoms become so uncomfortable that your child cannot tolerate them. Other symptoms (such as a fever, a general feeling of illness, or signs of infection) are severe or become worse. A new rash continues longer than 1 week. A rash that has been previously diagnosed continues longer than 4 weeks or is not following the expected course. Your child's symptoms become more severe or more frequent.

Excellent advice. Thanks a lot! He is doing somewhat better today and the good news is that when the rash starts the fever goes away so he no longer has a fever which is a blessing.

Well, the rash went away and he seems to be feeling much better! Thank goodness! The fever was definately the worst part. Thanks everyone for your kind words and advice.

My goodness he has a severe case! My kids had it, all three of them when they were babies, but they didn't have very bad cases, just a slight fever, runny nose, spots and the runs. I got it every time they did, and apparently can't build up an immunity to it. When my oldest grandson got it, I want to visit a friend, and stayed away the whole time he was ill. My three younger ones never got it. All you can really do for the little darlings is cuddle them and try to make them feel better.

Well he has had a fever of 103 for 5 days and he has just recently got the other symptoms about 2 days ago with the last symptom being the rash that he got today. It really sucks. He's napping now which is a blessing because he's so miserable.
