Have you ever had an auction?

I am getting ready to sell my late husbands valuables and liquidate the estate....why...because I don't think that my little boy will need or want what I am selling! There are so many tools in my garage that I think that I could tool up a machine shop...NO JOKE! My late husband would be duplicate and triplicate of things! I have looked through the rifle cabinets and chosen a few to keep, but I am selling the rest...he was a collector and we will be selling more rifles than I have fingers and toes! I contacted an auctioneer who will be doing the deed, and says that his commission is 30% plus the cost of the ad and a porta potty. What are your thoughts about this

If you and your children have what they want, I don't see anything wrong with having an auction. I have never had to deal with auctioneers, but the rates you stated sound pretty fair. If some things are valuable, you may want to find a better route to sell them, as auction items tend to not go for very much(in these parts anyway). That's just my opinion, though. I'm sorry that you are needing to do this. I'll be sending hugs your way as you sort through all the collectables. (((((((((HUGS))))))))

Thank you for your hugs! The more that I think about this, the better I feel about it, as I know that everything will go that day. Sorting through is a chore...I must admit that it is not one of my favorite things to do! HA!

I have never had a big auction like that, but watch antique roadshow on tv (hahaha lame, i know!). I think 30% is fair, considering they do all the work. Hopefully you make some good money. Does the auctioneer give you an idea of what the things might go for? Did you get anything appraised or are you just happy with whatever you get? I hope you make a bundle and can buy stuff you guys really want/need with the money :)

We had an auction when we decided to leave our home in the north, to live in the south. Though the % seems a little high to me it may be okay. I would call other auctioneers and ask their rates. Make sure a lot of advertizing is done! And don't let them talk you into having it on a weekday, or even a weekday evening!!! If you do you might get a crowd but it will be a lot of retired folks with little money to spend. Be there the day of the sale. Especially at the time people are looking at stuff prior to bidding. Try to answer all questions honestly, without giving too much detail as to how much you paid for anything. Good luck.

I have never had an auction, but I have been to several. I don't really know how you would negotiate the fee with an autioneer, but I think his commission is a little steep! Is he the only auctioneer that you contacted and is that the standard fee? Wow! Well, I hope you do well at the auction and keep us posted!
