Why people die for gold?

Hi,
I am always thinking about this thing that why people love gold so much. In all cultures and all countries and in all time periods, people have always been mad for gold. What is that special quality of gold that makes people crazy? Personally I don't feel golden ornaments beautiful enough. I think artificial jwellery is much prettier than golden. Apart from that gold doesn't have any use. Tell me your thoughts.

peoples die for gold?this statement just for those are greedy,they think the gold can change everything.maybe it is true that gold can make your life wealth, but it also can make your life bad...you will always be affraid that someone want to kill you to take the gold from you...scarry right?

I think that is an intelligent answer. But still my question is unanswered. Actually high price is the main reason behind gold's popularity, but my question is that in modern world there are many fashionalbe and good looking metalic ornaments are available, then still why people are crazy for golden ornaments?
