Do you garden for pleasure, grocery savings, pure necessity or all?

I love to garden and feel like I get a big cost savings from it. I do not add my time because I am enjoying it. However, I like to look at what I grow each year and get a mental picture of what it all would cost. I grow from seed, so they are cheap. I actually have about $25-$35 in my garden every year now. The mantis has been paid off a while. The blueberries alone are getting a couple of gallon a year and I planted those bushes five years ago at about $6 each, 4 in all. So I garden out of both concepts, savings and pleasure.

I must admit that I garden for the pure pleasure of it. I can't even call cutting the grass, edging, or weeding work because I love it all. I don't have enough room for a vegetable garden, so my brother tills up about a half an acre and we work this garden together. Actually, I do most of the weeding; but he did help when we pickled beets last year. That was an experience, neither one of us had ever canned anything before. I don't particularly like to can. Back to the garden though, my back would ache and my joints stiffen up and I would still be able to carry on. Funny how that same reason stops my housework.

I garden for both the enjoyment of making things grow and the cost savings. I try to freeze or can enough produce to get us through the winter. We have just moved so I need to start our garden over completely. Not sure how much will get put in this year. I want to atleast get the strawberry plants and the rhubarb planted for next years harvest.
