S-video probelms...need help here

I have a laptop with s-video port on it. Now i wanted to watch and use my TV as my monitor so I bought a plug S-video to 3arc (Something, 3 wires, video , left and right audio). I connected the plugs but nothing happens. I seacrh the help on my windows vista and said the same procedure as what I'm doing. Is there some settings that i need to reconfigure? On the help option, i need to disconnect the monitor on the CPU and put the s-video plug, but i'm using laptop, how can i disconnect my monitor?? any idea? thanks in advance.
