Machine stole my money!

So, we were out and about in a nearby town today doing errands and I decide to vacuum out the van. I get everything out that comes out, and go to the change machine as the vacuum costs 75 cents per round. I have a $1 bill and a $10 bill. Not thinking that $1 would cover my needs I opted to put my $10 in figuring I would use the car wash afterwards and need more quarters anyhow. The change machine spits out $2.25 - then starts grinding and grinding for a few minutes, then it spits out another $2.50 stops grinding and the red light comes on saying "Out of Service" For my $10 I got $4.75 in change!!! No phone number on the building, no worker on the premises. I found out who manages it by asking the owner of a nearby gas station and where I can find the person during business hours. Well, it was 5:30 and that place of business closed at 5. It will cost me over $3 in gas to drive out there tomorrow in hopes of getting my $5.25 I was shorted. Do you think I should request the gas money back too? what would you do?

In situations such as this, you will most likely not get the gas money it took to drive there to retrieve your money. It is awful that they don't service these machines regularly and that you had to go through that inconvenience. Maybe they will give you some vouchers for future use or something useful to you. I can't believe that happened to you! I hope you get your funds recovered. I hate it when that happens to me!

I would ask for the gas money as well, but I wouldn't hold my breath on getting it. I think in situations like these, it really all depends on who takes the complaint. Some people are going to want to do right by you and others couldn't be bothered or are too short sighted to see the importance of customer satisfaction.

He was very happy to give me the amt. that the machine shorted me - but laughed when I suggested the gas money. oh well. I decided to not use his car wash and vacuum but give the business elsewhere. Went there and plugged the money into the vacuum and the thing would not suck up anything.... went over to the next machine which worked great. I told the manager that the first machine is not functioning and he not only gave me my money back but also an $8 ultimate car wash token for my inconvenience. That is the place that will get my business for now on.

I would I mean the only other option would be to call the owner and then have them mail the money to you. I think it would depend on how 'fast' I needed the money as to whether I would drive out or just ask to have it mailed but if you have to drive I think they should pay your gas too.

Yes, of course you should! They might not give you, but it doesn't hurt to try. Unless you don't mind getting cheated and the money is too little to be bothered about.
