I need suggestions on cleaning my cat's ear.

My cat seems to be scratching at her ears about once a week really bad. I went to the store and bought some Hertz stuff that you drop into your cat's ear, rub it in, and then gentle clean them out. This doesn't work. How do you clean your cat's ears?

You might want to see a vet, if the cats ears has a reddish colored discharge it could have ear mites. The mites are so tiny that you really can not see them and it takes medication to clear it up. If you have a farmers co-op close to you you can find the meds and treat them yourself.

It's not reddis colored, it's black color. I just don't know if this is normal, or if she needs to see a vet. This is the first cat I have owned.

I was just reading your response to the first poster. I can just about guarantee you that the black colored stuff in your cat's ears are ear mites. Just cleaning the ears won't get rid of them. Your best bet is to go to a veterinarian and have it checked out. They have meds that are one dose per ear, and it kills the mites in one shot. But it's a little expensive. If you can't do that you can go to a pet supply store like Petsmart, or a feed store that carries pet supplies, or even a local pet store and get products specifically for ear mites. I would recommend R-7 Ear Mite Treatment if it is available. It works really well. If they don't carry that, any of them will do. You'll probably have to treat the ears a few times. But it's worth it, because your kitty will feel much better....those icky mites make their ears itch quite badly. Good luck hon.

Hmmm...I only have one cat and she is an inside cat. Never been outside. Please let me know if you find out any more information. Thanks!

You may also want to check with your vet about a multi-effect anti-parasitic medicine. When we adopted out kitten last fall (my first cat), the vet gave us one medicine for her that treated her for fleas, worms, and ear mites all at once. I think it's called Revolution, but I'm not positive.

I use plain old vaseline and Q-Tips.....just rub a very little bit around the area and than swab them clean.....if the cat has any nits or ticks in there, the vaseline will force them out, they can't hold on because it's to greasy and if they do mange to stay in there, the vaseline will eventually suffocate them....hope this helps

Yep, my cats get ear mites every now and then. I use ear mite drops, and q-tips. The vet did give me a tip I didn't know, though - wooden q-tips work better. Of course these are only obtainable through medical supply companies, but they make it a lot easier to clean the cat's ears. He also said that the cat's ear canal is set up so crazily that you cannot harm them by going in deep after massaging the meds in. I used to be squeamish about making sure I got the deep globs, but now I'm not - and my one cat who gets ear mites most often is happier that I do a more thorough job when I have to. Also - after I treat his ears I give him a little spray of cortisone hot-spot and massage it in. It stops him from scratching due to any irritation that the cleaning may have caused.

Never heard of wooden q-tips but I will find them. Also the corisone hot-spot is a great hint.

Hello!^_^ I don't clean my cats ears because her big kitten cleans her ears and she cleans her kittens ears by licking into her ears. I don't want to do anything to my cats ears because I'm afraid that an infection may occur.

I wish I had another cat that would do it for me. But I just can stand to see her scratching at them, I have to do something about it.
